Marty Pfeiffer's Music

Welcome to my music website. I started writing music in high school and went to college to study composition. The music on this website spans a period of over a decade--from my earliest attempts to my more recent work. I've recently digitally re-mastered most of my best music.

I've categorized my music by time period:

The High School Years
My early work. Mostly music I wrote while learning how to program and play synthesizers. I think one of the most important things I learned in this period was how to choose sounds and how to put them together to make a satisfying aural palate. Most of the music is harmonically simple, but there are the occasional tonal surprises.
The Freshman/Sophomore College Years
In my Freshman year at Whitworth, I didn't have any of my musical equipment until the winter semester. My parents thought I should be "studying" instead of "messing around on keyboards." So I was forced to use the school's equipment. This was my first introduction to music on the Macintosh. I learned how to use "Finale" to notate (and play) my music. I actually played a song for the famous composer, Lucas Foss in the winter of my freshman year! I'll have to find "Bangedout" and record it for this site.
The Junior/Senior College Years
I think that my Junior year was the real turning point as far as my maturity as a composer. I culminated my skill as a "synth-n-drums" man and moved on to composing for human performers. This is some of my best work.
The Post-College Years
For a long time after college, I didn't write a single note. Recently, I started using a program called "Reason" that fits a studio worth of equipment into your computer. It's incredible what you can do--simply by hooking up a keyboard to the computer, you can write any kind of music with all sorts of different instruments and effects. The best part: if you need to use another piece of equipment, no need to pawn your leather jacket, simply select if from a menu and it appears in Reason for you to use. The simplicity eliminates a lot of the hair pulling that ensures when working with music equipment. No wires to go bad, no MIDI cables to buy. Reason has rekindled my interest in making music.
